What is Homesteading?

We're so glad you asked!! Homesteading can traditionally be defined as “any dwelling with land and buildings where a family makes its home.”  We hear this term more and more these days used to describe building a place where a family can live, produce food, and prosper.  We have become so disconnected to where our food comes from, we have lost the knowledge of what it takes to produce it.  Food in America is mass-produced, severely genetically modified and alarmingly low in nutritional value. Any food we can produce and preserve at home not only provides physical wellness by fueling our body with wholesome nutritious food but also with emotional wellness. 

Join us for our Homesteading 101 courses to learn ways you can produce and preserve food at home.  No experience is needed!  Jump in to an individual course or register for all 6 courses at a discounted price. 

Fermentation 

Before refrigeration, food was preserved through fermentation.  At this class, you will learn what fermentation is and what types exist as well as the incredible health benefits associated with fermented foods.  You will also learn how to make several types including yogurt, kombucha, pickles and sauerkraut and will take your own creation home!

Herbs Herbs Herbs 

Herbs have been used for thousands of years for medicinal, culinary and decorative uses. At this class you will learn different uses for a variety of herbs that can be grown at home and ways to preserve them.  You will also get to take potted herbs home for your personal use.

Cheesemaking

In this class you will learn how to make fresh Chevre from local Goat Milk.  Add in herbs or dried fruit to personalize it to your preference.  You will also take home some of our house sourdough crackers and house seed crackers to enjoy with your Chevre! ​

Introduction to Beekeeping

Beekeeping has certainly been on the rise for many homesteaders, but can be intimidating.  At this class we will discuss what beekeeping entails in terms of time, costs, equipment and basic maintenance of hives. We will touch briefly on getting started with beekeeping and basic bee knowledge.  We will provide helpful, local resources and answer questions.  Participants will take home a small jar of local honey.

Naturally-Leavened Breadmaking

Today it is estimated that over 30% of Americans have some level of gluten-intolerance.  This is largely due to the way we process our grains.  Grains are mono-cropped meaning they are grown on the same nutrient-depleted fields year after year, they are genetically modified and are lower in nutrients, and they are highly sprayed.  After they are harvested, they are milled and stripped of more nutrients to extend their shelf life, they are bleached and either packaged as flour or used to make processed foods.  In this class we will be using our own starter and locally grown organic grains to show you how to make naturally-leavened (no commercial yeast is used) bread.  Not only is naturally-leavened bread better for our health, the taste is far superior! You will take home your own starter from this class.

Introduction to Home Vegetable Production:

Thinking about starting your own vegetable production? Come learn the basics in this introduction level course.  Learn about soil testing and getting your space ready to plant, what vegetables to plant and where, weed and pest maintenance, feeding and caring for you plants as well as time and equipment requirements.
